Sophie Barat School is an independent, non – fee-paying, co-educational grammar school governed by the Association of Roman Catholic Church Parishes in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

The school is run by the Society of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic teaching order.

Mission Statement

• We are one of the largest grammar schools in Hamburg with a very wide range of courses in Language(s), Music, Social Studies and in the Sciences. We follow the curriculum of the Hamburg School Authority. All of our leaving certificates (German equivalents of GCSE and A Level / High School Diploma) are state approved and fully accredited.
• As a Roman Catholic school we are a place of living faith. We rely on a Christian consensus between parents, students and members of staff and would like to provide young people with answers to their questions on God and the meaning of life. We see ourselves as a community of learners and educators and endeavour to have an open ear for the troubles and concerns of our students.
• We are aware of the challenges of the modern world which young people must meet when they leave our school and try to prepare them for this. The school has the latest equipment and we provide a solid foundation in the mother tongue and in foreign languages. Awakening and encouraging intellectual curiosity in our students is important while at the same time providing them with values which give their lives a meaning. Our school community sees an enrichment in the ethnic and socio-economic diversity of our students.
